One of URMIA’s strategic goals is to promote a sense belonging for all members within our community and the profession of higher education risk management. These initiatives are critical to evolve our organization and profession and URMIA is committed to taking intentional and affirmative steps as we progress into the future. Our Be the Change Scholarships recognize and support an individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing effective risk management practices at a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI). Scholarships are intented to encourage professional development, knowledge sharing, and leadership that strengthen institutional resilience, safety, and compliance across higher education.

Eligibility for these scholarships is based on professional role, demonstrated experience, and contributions to risk management or related functions (such as compliance, safety, insurance, emergency management, audit, or enterprise risk management) at a MSI as defined by federal law. Applicants may be staff or administrators whose responsibilities include supporting institutional risk management efforts.

Selection is grounded in individual merit, including:

  • Demonstrated commitment to improving risk management practices;
  • Contributions that enhance institutional operations, safety, compliance, or continuity;
  • Engagement in professional development or leadership activities related to risk management; and
  • Alignment with the mission of the institution and of URMIA.

These scholarships are open to all qualified individuals, regardless of race, color, national origin, or any other protected characteristic. Award decisions are made without regard to protected status and in full compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and applicable guidance from the US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

By investing in professionals who support risk management at MSIs, these scholarships advance institutional capacity, promote sound governance, and benefit the broader higher education community.
