Founded in 1969, University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) is uniquely dedicated to the advancement of the profession of risk management in higher education. URMIA provides community, education, and resources to an international community of over 2,800 members. This includes practicing professionals at more than 550 institutions of higher learning, as well as more than 100 affiliate companies and partner organizations that serve the needs of higher education risk management. URMIA is headquartered in Bloomington, Indiana.

Position Summary

Overview

Reporting to the URMIA Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the effective day-to-day operations of the Association and for carrying out the mission, goals, strategies, plans, and procedures of the Association as a whole. This includes providing strategic leadership for the organization, the staff, and the membership. The successful candidate will be an exceptional leader and manager with the ability to oversee the day-to-day operations of URMIA, lead a talented staff of 7, serve as a spokesperson for the Association, and communicate regularly with URMIA’s membership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and strategic management to ensure implementation of the mission and core values of the organization, and guides efforts for growth and strength of the Association.
  • Works with board and staff to meet URMIA’s vision and strategic goals.
  • Provides oversight and leadership to Association committees and ad hoc task forces, as needed, ensuring integration with strategic goals.
  • Builds strategic alliances with corporate partners and sister higher ed associations, which expand resources and opportunities for the membership and the community.
  • Manages HR responsibilities including developing and implementing internal policies and procedures and setting essential goals, duties, performance metrics, and training for staff.
  • Manages staff recruitment, retention and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Manages staff budget, oversees the business continuity plan and process, and manages insurance for the organization.
  • Manages all contractual agreements in accordance with contracts procedure in financial policies and procedures.
  • Manages board and executive agenda and directives by tracking and closing loops and working with board secretary to ensure timely completion of directives.
  • Provides oversight of Regional & Annual Conferences and their impact on operational costs.
  • Supports treasurer, bookkeeper, and committee chairs in all needed functions, including budget processes, and provides oversight of all payments to assure that all funds are appropriately safeguarded and administered.
  • Ensures organization stability and sustainability through attention to operating revenues, membership dues increases, and staff retention.
  • Provides metrics and accountability for achieving the overall measures of success for the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing communications or other associated field, or commensurate experience.
  • Strong computer skills in all Microsoft Office products. Must exhibit strong organizational qualities, be self-directed, demonstrate an eye for detail and accuracy, and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Budgeting and finance skills.
  • This position will simultaneously require and develop skills in the areas of program development, meeting planning, marketing and promotion, assessment and evaluation, facilitation, travel planning, budgeting and financial management, and networking with volunteers.
  • Ability to manage an off-site group of volunteers.
  • Ability to travel regularly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years in association management.
  • Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation, or any designation offered by association organizations.
  • Higher Ed insurance, risk management, and/or organizational management experience.
