URMIA Member Needs Assessment
I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who participated in the 2018 URMIA Member Needs Assessment, which was conducted through online and telephone channels by McKinley Advisors in May. At the deadline, 355 members had participated online, and another 21 members had been surveyed via telephone interview. Every type of member is represented in the assessment, and every size of institution is included.

"It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it." While we can understand Benjamin Franklin's point, a single bad deed does not necessarily guarantee long-term damage, even in today's world of instant reporting. University stakeholders understand that managing institutions of higher education means there are a variety of risks that may be present. But damage to an institution's reputation is not as likely to occur if a negative incident - of any proportion - is handled appropriately. If mishandled, however, it can quickly damage stakeholders' trust in the organization and possibly cause long-term reputational damage.

When natural disasters, violence or health epidemics strike, universities and colleges must respond immediately to ensure their students, faculty and staff traveling domestically or abroad are safe and have access to timely emergency resources. Preparation is key for delivering a proper response that protects an institution’s travelers and mitigates possible damage to the university's reputation.

- "2018 URMIA Environmental Liability Insurance Survey," URMIA. This recent survey of URMIA’s membership aimed to learn what the practices are for purchasing environmental liability insurance in higher education. This insurance is also known as pollution liability insurance.
- "Blockchain: New Risk for Higher Education?," URMIA, May 31, 2018. This webinar discussed how blockchain could impact colleges and universities. Because many URMIA members are responsible for their institution's insurance programs, the webinar also covered how blockchain may bear on the insurance industry.
- "2018 URMIA Cyber Insurance Survey Report," URMIA. This survey documented the current practices for purchasing cyber insurance in higher education and updated the information gained in a similar survey conducted in March 2015.
- "An Analysis of the Drone Industry's Progress and Focus on Safety," Global Aerospace, Inc. The unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) industry is growing at a speed that will challenge our expectations. This new white paper analyzes the data and shares some of what we have learned from the substantial collection of salvaged hardware scrutinized over the past several years. It also provides practical advice for loss prevention and risk management for drone operators.
- "Campus Protests and Demonstrations: The Role of Emergency Management," National Center for Campus Public Safety. What is the role of the emergency management program during the planning process for events likely to result in protests and demonstrations? This report comes out of discussions held at a forum of campus public safety executives from 23 institutions of higher education gathered in Long Beach, Cal., on November 10, 2017.
- "What Will It Take to Build an Analytics-Driven Campus? A Survey of Higher Ed Leaders," Ellucian. Most higher education institutions have already begun investing in analytics programs or plan to do so in the next few years. But for analytics programs to fulfill their promise to improve both institutional and learning outcomes, college leaders need to overcome the campus-wide financial and cultural barriers which hinder implementation.
