Part I – The increasing prevalence of faculty unionization on college campuses
The number of adjunct professors that make up instructional faculty at US colleges and universities is much larger than it used to be, and in recent years, the movement for these adjuncts to unionize has gained significant momentum on college campuses.  In fact, labor organization efforts by college and university adjuncts are thought to be under way in 22 states around the country. 1 A recent decision by the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”) which created a stringent criteria for classifying adjuncts faculty as management not protected by the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”), may further encourage adjunct unionizing efforts. 2

I recently met a colleague for coffee at Starbucks. When it comes to coffee, I’m a relatively simple guy: medium coffee, light with milk, two ice cubes and one Splenda. So when my friend whipped through 8 options in the process of ordering a cup-o-Joe, I had to smile at the elaborate decision making tree that was required for what was supposed to be a mindless activity. No sooner did we sit down then he announced that his company had just purchased its first cyber breach insurance policy.

“What inspired them to finally make the long overdue decision?” I asked. Answer: A major competitor had been breached and management figures that their turn is coming soon.

RIMS Legislative Summit

By Sally Alexander, Chief Risk Officer, and Director, Colorado State University; Board of Directors, URMIA; and chair of URMIA’s Governmental Regulatory Affairs Committee (GRAC).

I recently had the honor to represent URMIA 1 at the June 2015 RIMS Legislative Summit in Washington, DCRisk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) advocates on behalf of its members which  represents a diverse membership of about 3,500 industrial, service, nonprofit, charitable and governmental entities throughout the world and over 10,000 risk management individual members. Each year it hosts a summit to encourage members to gain first-hand experience with the legislative process and to encourage members to actively participate in government. RIMS provides experts to explain the legislative process and its potential impact on the risk management profession.

Unlike RIMS, URMIA does not lobby Congress. Instead it seeks to educate its members on legislative issues and encourages them to speak on these issues with their state and federal representatives when appropriate. Follow the Government and Regulatory Affairs Committee discussion board to learn more about how URMIA prepares members to address legislative issues.

By Kim Miller, Director of Risk Management, Insurance and Safety at Ball State University, member of URMIA's Board of Directors, and liaison to URMIA's Membership Committee.

This month’s board corner spotlights the membership committee. As the board liaison for membership, it’s been amazing to work with such a hardworking and dedicated team. Our metrics show that we have made progress in all categories of membership and are now almost 2,200 members strong. I am incredibly proud of the work the committee has accomplished and the focus they have continued to demonstrate.

Risk management really is everyone's responsibility: job titles show URMIA members' broad range of duties

By Glenn Klinksiek, Knowledge Center Content Manager, URMIA.

Who in higher education has a responsibility for or interest in risk management? A look at the job titles of URMIA members shows predictably that risk managers do. But the job titles also show a large group of people with responsibilities outside of risk management who have an interest in the field. Further, many risk managers themselves have other institutional responsibilities in addition to risk management.

Of the approximately 1,550 URMIA members working at colleges and universities, about 800 (52 percent) have responsibilities including risk management as indicated in their job title. These include members with the following terms in their job titles: “risk management”, “claims”, “insurance”, “workers’ compensation”, “risk”, “risk finance”, “risk strategy” and similar. The remaining 750 appear to have primary responsibilities other than risk management.
