Before hanging my 2016 calendar, I looked through the beautiful pictures for each month and glanced at the days on which the holidays fall (good news: extended weekends are assured as July 4 falls on Monday and Christmas on Sunday). Obviously, though, what are missing from the calendar are the events that will shape the challenges ahead. As risk managers, we try to anticipate the possibilities and plan for them if they should occur. Here are my thoughts about what might be coming in 2016.

The URMIA Library now contains 19 emergency plan exercise scenarios that member institutions may use as a starting point for creating scenarios to test their own plans. The scenarios are found in the URMIA Library folder, "Plan Exercise Scenarios," within the "Emergency Response" sub-folder. The scenarios are detailed below. A big thank you to Luke Figora, Northwestern University; Mark Wesley, PEM, Eastern Michigan University; Robert Grieshaber, University of Wisconsin-Parkside; and a member from a private university that did not want to be identified for their submissions to this excellent new library resource.

In December, Congress passed a $1.1 trillion FY16 omnibus spending bill, which provides funding for the federal government through September 30, 2016. The massive deal contains numerous provisions important to the higher education community, with implications for students, families and institutions.

As URMIA’s president-elect, I have the privilege of serving as the board of director’s liaison to the Affiliates Committee. Affiliate members of URMIA are typically, but not solely, for-profit entities, such as insurers and suppliers of both products and services, that practice in the field of higher education. Affiliate members have voting rights, may hold office (except Executive Committee office) and may be appointed to URMIA committees, task forces or advisory groups. Regardless of whether we partake of the commercial services available to our institutions or are competitors in business, through URMIA we work side by side as professional colleagues, partners and friends. Currently, URMIA’s affiliate membership totals 390.
